increasing K & P stitches making a spoke type pattern on yoke

I knit the Sunday Sweater (Ravelry $) and like it a lot but the expanding widening “spokes” look wiggly at the increases. It uses M1L & M1R which I’ve done fairly often but I don’t know on this pattern how to keep it from looking like that. It even looks like that on the pattern’s model picture. Any ideas?

Thanks

I just tried a small sample with lifted increases worked on the first and last stitches using the leg inside the stockinette section. For me this would be better. The knit front, slip back version of kfb might work better for you but I usually end up with holes when I use it, I don’t know that anyone else has that problem or why I do.

I just realized you increase in the reverse stockinette areas too. I didn’t try the lifted increases there.

Thanks GrumpyGramma  Yes, unfortunately it’s in the purl section between the “spokes” doing those lifted increases, the right lifted before the spoke and the left lifted right after the “spoke”, I’ve seen other pics on Pinterest etc and those don’t have that slight wiggle on either side. too bad the f&b’s really do make little holes. they’re so much easier. :frowning: I tried to add a pic here but for some reason they’re not being emailed from my Photos to my email to get them on this laptop. Really appreciate your input

Hi  In the email I got it said I could reply to you there so I did. I thought for some reason that it’d show up here but it doesn’t seem to so I’ll put it here.

I love learning different ways to do stitches so it’ll be fun. Thaks again!

Oops, i see that it actually did show up first so now I’ve duplicated it

Things happen. If this is the worst thing we experience today I’d say we’re doing fantastic!

I just tried raised/lifted increases in purl and don’t see significant wiggling. To be sure we’re on the same page here’s a video for the increase which can be worked twisted or not depending on your preference. I avoid m1 increases using the running thread for the simple reason that I don’t like doing them.

You’re not kidding!

Thanks. I have such a short memory I can’t even remember. I’ll have to look. When I’ve done the m1l and m1r they don’t look wiggly in other patterns but in this one, I don’t know if you can see without a close up, about every two inches in length they kind of pull in a little giving it the wavy look. I’m going to go back to my sweater and see since I don’t remember having to do purl increases. I’m going to go back to the pattern. Thanks a lot for the video. It’s definitely a winner!

Oh, is there a video of doing a M1l or r on the stockinette side like this? I’ve only seen them using the running thread between the stitches.

Here’s a video for M1l, M1R from the knit side. Notice that as engblom has suggested in another thread, she just uses the needle tip to pick up the bar.

Great looking yoke pattern!

I just realized you asked for something other than using the running thread. Is this what you wanted? Rox and Knit Purl Hunter are on my list of demonstrators who don’t talk too much, stay on topic, and don’t have distracting nail polish. lol

thanks a lot. I forgot about that one  I’ve watched Rox and Knit Purl HUnter videos and they’re really good. Appreciate it.

Thanks . I’ve done M1L and M1R for a couple of years without a problem, it’s just that in this pattern it’s almost like the "spoke"pattern seems to pull in a bit visually at the increase rows so the increaseing “spokes” don’t progress in a straight way. I checked the pattern and forgot that on the purl section of increases they do a purl f&b. the M1s are on the knit stitches. Maybe it’s something about the purl f&b that does it?

I’m going to try that one. I remember months ago just trying thtat to test it out but I forgot all about it. I also don’t remember if it makes a small hole like with YOs. It’s a little less fiddly than the running thread M1s

I like using the tip of the needle too

Thanks so much everyone for your answers and videos. This group is so great!

I typically don’t see holes with this type of increase, sometimes I knit it so it twists and sometimes I don’t, but we’re all different. I opt for something easy for me. What works for you is all that matters. Above all knitting should be enjoyable or it’s not worth the time and effort. I am confident that you’ll find your solution.
