Increasing in pattern stitches?

OK, I’m really confused. I’m knitting a lovely tank topthat has a pretty, simple lace pattern at the bottom (alternating YO K2Tog and K2Tog YO, with purl on odd rows) and K2 P2 ribbing at the top. In the lace pattern, I have 64 stitches on the needles and need to increase 18 stitches evenly across. I figured out how much to increase and where, BUT I’m not sure how to go about this. Do I increase in the lace pattern before starting the K2P2 ribbing? Do I start the increases when I start the ribbing? :??

I’m off today and not feeling well, so I really don’t want to head to my LYS. Any help would be appreciated. I feel so stupid.

I would finish the lace pattern, then do the increase row, then to the ribbing. If this doesn’t make sense, maybe you could post the phrasing of the pattern for clarification.

Thanks Ingrid. So, would my increase row be plain stockinette stitch? That’s the part I don’t get.

The directions aren’t specific at all. I’ll have to run downstairs and get them to post that part. Thank you so much for responding so quickly. Everyone here is so nice.

Sincerely,

gardenia

Update: over on the Knitters Review forum, 2 people suggested doing the increases on the last wrong side (purl) row of the lace pattern, before I switch to the k2p2 ribbing. Makes sense to me, so that’s what I will try.

Thanks!

ah ha, now I see your post! learning to increase also…

I know how but it gets tricky with different patterns.
Did it work out for you?

Vic, it worked perfectly! Well, after the 3rd or 4th try. The pattern was the most advanced I’ve tried so far; it didn’t say exactly where to increase, just “increase 18 stitches evenly across.” I made a silly error in following my own little chart. Once I figured out what I was doing incorrectly, it was easy. :cheering:

Now I wish I wasn’t so seriously math challenged. But, I’m determined to get this.

Happy Sunday,

gardenia

good news Gardenia! Wow, I just looked at those tank tops… they are BEAUTIFUL. Is there a pattern available on that site?
What yarn did you use btw?

So how DO you know where to increase?

Well, Nuno, I am math-impaired, so this took me ages to figure out! I looked in several books, and many had a section about increasing “evenly across.” I don’t feel comfortable enough to explain it to anyone! I hope someone here will jump in – you might need to start a new thread so they see your question. In the meantime, these might help:

http://www.knitabit.net/wisdom/increaseevenly.htm

http://www.thedietdiary.com/knittingfiend/tools/IncreaseEvenlySpace.html (sure wish I had found this before my math-horror weekend!)

Apparently there is also at least one software product that will do all this for you. Might be worth it for me.

Good luck,

Oops, I just noticed your question. The pattern is in a Lana Grossa pattern book, Filati 29 (what does it mean? heck if I know!). I bought it at my LYS for about $10. It is probably available on the site that has photos of the tank. The yarn is made by Lana Grossa, Italian, and is called Binario. It is 50% cotton, 45% viscose and 5% polyamide (I think that is what makes it slightly shiny – it looks half shiny, half matte). It is wonderful to work with. I used a gift certificate a friend gave me to our LYS, so that helped with the cost. I saw this tank made up in the lime green, and it was very cute. The stitch pattern at the bottom of the tank is way easier than it looks.

I just added a photo on my blog of my “progress” (if you can call it that). :rofling:

Thanks for the input and support,
