Increasing in a sleeve

I am knitting a sweater for my granddaughter in simple stockinette sticth. For shaping the sleeve, this is what the instructions say:

Inc 1 st each end foll 3rd row once, then 1 st each end foll 8th rows 9 times more.

It then says that there should be 61 shaping rows.

I’m confused. Can anyone explain what I’m supposed to do and how they arrive at that number of rows?

Welcome to KH. What pattern are you doing, can you link to it? Even knowing the name of it is sometimes helpful.

Welcome to KnittingHelp!
A pattern link is always a good idea.
If you call the next row, row 1 then you should increase at each end on row 3 and then rows 11,19,27,35,43,51,59,67 and 75. Offhand, I don’t see where the “61 shaping rows” comes from.

It is in the book Ella Rae Booklet 123. I’m doing the pattern called Patsy. I’m not able to find the pAttern on line, only the book for sale in various places. Here’s the only link I can find:

That’s cute. Could you please type out the line in question exactly as it appears in the pattern? Also, how many stitches are on your needle before beginning the increases? I may be way off base here but then again, maybe not.

This is the line as it appears in the pattern (I put the numbers in that correspond to the size I’m making):

Inc 1 st each end foll 3rd row once, then 1 st each end foll 8th row 9 times more.

There are 44 stitches on the needle to start.

I was really wondering about the part about 61 shaping rows. I thought maybe it was actually saying how many stitches you would have but the numbers don’t add up.

Here’s what it says:
Shape sides as foll: Inc 1 st each end foll 3rd row once, then 1 st each end foll 4th (4th, 6th, 8th) rows 9 times more. ( 52(56,60,64) sts, 31(39,53,61) shaping rows)

I have 44 stitches on the needle - I’m making the largest size.

I couldn’t find any errata for this pattern but there are certainly errors

Disregard the number of shaping rows. There are mistakes for almost all sizes in that number. (After all, why should the number of rows be different for the smallest and the next size when the number of increases is the same?)
Increase on the rows indicated in post 3 and you’ll be fine.

It’s a darling sweater and will work out well, I’m sure.

Thank you so much. I will knit on!
