I just learned how to do a lifted increase- if I were making something, what is the difference between doing a lifted increase vs a bar increase? I just don’t understand where it might be appropriate to do either or, or are they interchangeable?
By bar increase do you mean kfb? It’s possible to sub increases but a kfb has to be counted differently most of the time. I love using lifted increases but do sometimes use kfb because I want the look they give. As with so many things which increase to use is knitter’s choice. If you’re not sure what to do when you want to sub, just ask. Someone will have your answer.
I was so excited when I learned lifted increases!
I find that the lifted increase is a little more invisible, especially in stocking stitch. By bar increase, l assume you mean the M1 where you lift the running thread between the stitches and k twisted either through front or back to get R or L leaning. Lifting this bar pulls a bit out of the stitches either side and you can get a small hole at the base of the new stitch. You get exactly the same increase, without tightening the yarn by working a yarn over at the increase point on the row below, then knitting the yarn over twisted to get the favoured lean!
You have to be careful with what increase you pick if you’re changing colour or working stripes, but I prefer the lifted increase where possible!
Thanks for explaining that to me!
