I purchased a pattern for a Cricket Jumper (men’s sweater) designed by
Sue Hanmore and I do not understand the directions for increases to the sleeves.
I cast on 59 stitches and the basic pattern is:
RS: K1, (p2, k1, sl next st purlwise wyib, k1) to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
WS: K3, (p3, k2) to last st, k1.
The instructions say:
“Working extra sts into patt, inc 1 st at each end of
5[5:5:7:7:7:5:5:5:5]th and every foll 7[6:8:10:9:8:6:6:6:5]th
row to 59[65:71:79:85:89:95:99:107:113] sts.” Bold numbers apply to my size.

How do I add a stitch to the end of the row, or do I increase between stitches near the end?
-
What rows get the increases?
-
Do I add knits or purls and how do i maintain the pattern?
I would attach the pattern but it’s too big to attach and it was a purchase.
Cricket Is that your pattern?
I’d work the increase a stitch in from the ends of the row to make seaming easier. If I could work a knit or purl and it would be in pattern, I’d do that. Otherwise I think I’d just use a knit (make 1 would do) or do a kfb and not worry about the purl-like result. The next row I’d work that added stitch as whatever the pattern would call for at that point. Counting the row where the instructions are given for when to increase as row 1, I would work 6 rows and then increase on the next row, that would be row 7, work another 8 rows and increase.
Thanks GrumpyG,
Your link is the pattern I’m doing and the people at Artesano Yarns have been prompt and helpful and confirmed what you said in your post.
Basically I have a nub on both ends of the row which will not be seen because of the seam from joining pieces. Therefore on both ends of row 7 (rs) I add a stitch next to the nubs which leaves 61 stitches on the needle. Then on row 16 (ws) I add two more stitches giving 63 in total, etc.
Thanks again for your insight.
