Increase - JCrew Hat Pattern

I am working on the J Crew Hat pattern (http://www.vintageknits.com/jcrew.html)and I’ve finished the ribbing and am about to start on ther rest of the hat and it says to increase on the first round by 2 stitches. But it doesn’t say where or what kind of increase.

Does it matter? Can I just do a M1 twice after the first stitch? I am not even sure why I need an increase?

Mk1 would produce a hole in the finished fabric.

Maybe one of these increases will help.

If you knit the M1 stitch into the back loop after you pick up the bar, you shouldn’t get a hole. You can do one a third of the way in and the other 2/3 of the way. You probably increase now so that when you start decreasing at the top you have the correct number of stitches to do it evenly.

Thanks all!
