Well, I started knitting this shell a little earlier. It says to knit 3 rows, and increase 5 stitches evenly on the last row. I accidently knit 3 rows without increasing, so changed it to knit 4 rows… which is okay to do… right? As long as I do it for both front and back?
My real question though is what increases do I use? And when do I do them?
I should know this stuff, but I haven’t been knitting for a while and I guess everything is having trouble coming back to me. lol.

I would think you should be fine modifying the pattern as long as you remember to do that to the front and back. As for the increases, you take the number of stitches you need to increase, add 1 and divide into the total number in your row (ex: you need to increase 4 stitches evenly across a row of 30 stitches: 4 + 1 = 5, 30 divided by 5 = 6. You would increase every sixth stitch.) As for the increase, you could knit into the front and back of the stitch.
I think the M1 increase might work well here, too, since it’s the most invisible.
