Recently bought this pattern and can’t make the cable work! I must have ripped and started over 10+ times now. The first line of cable - row 5 once the knit stitches are on the cable needle I’m knitting into purl stitches which isn’t right? On the 6th row I have knit stitches where there should be purl. I’m doing the middle size. Any help would be appreciated. Just can’t work it out!! Thank you
Incorrect pattern?
I’m sorry that you had to go through this. There is a correction on the Ravelry page for the pattern in size M.
Errata for Medium size only, BACK : Complete an additional Row 2 before beginning Row 5. What was previously your WS, will now be your RS. This will align the k4, p4 rib with the cable rows (5, 7, 19 and 21).
Hi
I ripped it all and started again! It still doesn’t work, even with the additional row. The first cable row C8F means that you put 4 knit stitches on the cable needle and then you have to knit the next 4 which are purl stitches which isn’t right and means
you have purl stitches showing on the cable.
Verging on giving up!!!
I can just about see the cable cross instructions in your photo. Check them and see if you aren’t crossing 4 knit sts to the front, purling the next 4, knitting 4 and then knitting the sts off the cable needle. From the sweater photo it looks like there is a purl column running up between the knit columns of that first cable.
You’re right, there does seem to be a purl column but C8F says ‘slip 4 sts to cable needle, hold to front, knit 4, knit 4 from cable needle - so that’s 8 knit stitches in a row the T8F instruction for row 7 seems to work better. Slip 4 stitches to cable needle,
hold to front, purl 4, knit 4 from cable needle.
I wonder have these been put the wrong way round?
These cable crosses are worked on two RS rows (rows 5 and 7). The first is the simple C8F x3:
“slip 4 sts to cable needle, hold to front, knit 4, knit 4 from cable needle.” So all 8sts are knit, even the originally purl sts.
On the next cable cross row, work the T8F x3:
“Slip 4 stitches to cable needle, hold to front, purl 4, knit 4 from cable needle.”
Your converting 4 knit sts to purl sts as you make this cross.
Also note that the row 5 cables begin after working 65sts where the row 7 cables begin 4sts later after 69sts. The pattern is correct for the cable rows.
Thank you so much for your help and explanation. I’m going to give it another go! Fingers crossed
I’ve tried it on the needles so if it isn’t working, come on back and we can think again. Happy 2025!
You’re very kind. Thank you
