Inc R Inc L

I have looked through this site, but don’t find any reference to increase right and increase left, other than front&back increases. I am not sure if there are other names for this technique, so I’m not sure what to do next.

My pattern (for wool longies with a short gusset) say that at the point of beginning the gusset I am to:

DIVIDE FOR GUSSET SHAPING:
Knit 56 st, place marker, k1, place marker Repeat between * * once.
To work increase round: k to marker, sl marker, inc right, k to marker, inc left, sl marker Repeat between ** once.
For short gusset: Work 1 round plain & 1 inc round until there are 9 stitches between the markers.

So I have NO CLUE what I am supposed to do now. Can you help me figure out the instructions for inc right and inc left? The only thing I can think of from this site is make 1 front and make 1 back. Any links?

Thoughts???

I suspect that they are just telling you to choose an increase that leans to the right or the left. If you look at Amy’s instructions she has a photo of a knitted piece with many different right/left leaning increases and decreases with examples of what they different choices are.
