I’m knitting a cardigan for my granddaughter. This is a first for me. I’m working on the sleeves and it says to inc at beginning and end of every 6th row x4 then every 8th row x3. My question is 2 fold, is it on the 1st and last stitch of that row or in several stitches and which method of inc should I use? I see there are several kinds: kfb or I saw one that knits the stitch and move it back to left needle and proceed. Thanks for any insight on this.
Inc for sleeve
Hello
If you do the inc a stitch or 2 in from the edge it makes seaming a bit easier and can look a bit neater but it’s personal preference really.
Some patterns have notes at the beginning or in a different section which give you the type of inc to do, you could look for that, although in any case you can choose your preferred type of inc. It could be a m1 make 1 left and make 1 right give mirrored increases that lean a little so you can use one at one end and one at the other.
Honestly the first sweater I made for my son I didn’t know any of this, I have no idea what type of increase I did and I doubt they were set in from the edge or mirrored, it all got hidden in the seaming so really it didn’t matter much. It’s only that it’s a bit harder to seam and these mirrored increases a a bit nicer.
Much of this is personal preference as Creations mentioned. I like to make the inc one or two sts in from the edge and really like the look of these lifted increases (second ones demonstrated in the video, 3:30min).
There’s also a neater kfb that will work.
Lovely to knit for a granddaughter and then when she’s ready, perhaps teach her to knit?
Ooh I love that alternative to kfb …now if only I could remember it next time I’m on an increase!
She just turned 7 and I recently bought a round loom to help her get started. She seems really interested when I’m knitting so I thought I’d give this a try. Thanks for all the helpful advice. I check a lot of videos but sometimes just get more confused so it’s great to get insight from others!
Just watched the videos you attached. I like the look of the alternative kfb in 2nd video. I think I’ll give that a try. Thanks
