Im so nervous! first time felter here

a very close family friend passed away leaving his wife of 35 years alone. i wanted to make something just for her… since she live in NC i didnt want to make a blanket or a scarf, so i tried my skills at a knitted purse. im so nervous. its in the washer now and im petrified it will be ruined! anyone else nervous with their first felting?

I was absolutely petrified! My first felting was clogs, and they had to fit!
I’m sure it will be lovely, the colors are. It’s so thoughtful of you to do this.
Do you have something to put it over to dry to help hold it’s shape?

Oh I think it will be LOVELY when it comes out of the washer!! :inlove:

And I’m so sorry to hear about your close friend.

om gosh… it didnt come out… i just put it in the tub to soak in hot water. is there anything i can do to rescue it?

thank you for the sweet words too about Charles. it was sudden & he was only 57. :frowning:

Be sure and post pictures post felting! What yarn did you use for it?

It didn’t come out in what way? Meaning it didn’t felt, or it felted too much? If it didn’t felt enough, you can wash it again. Some yarns take a long time and a lot of agitation/heat to felt.

oh thank you. ill put it back in. it didnt felt. oi vey! knitting isnt supposed to be so stressful! :roflhard:

Sometimes it takes several run throughs before felting. Make sure you have some other things in the wash with it to help with agitation–blue jeans are good. The hotter the water and the more the agitation, the better.

It’s not superwash wool by any chance is it?

That would be horrible

thank you! ill throw in the jeans now.

its cascade pastazza & another 100% wool i foolishly threw the labels away for (ugh, i dont usually do that, not sure what i was thinking! )

what does superwash wool mean?

ps… i just checked on it, it is felting! - how do i tell when it is exactly perfect?

Superwash wool is treated so it won’t felt when you wash it in the machine, even though it’s 100% wool.

Just keep checking your, now-felting bag and take it out when it’s the size you want it to be.

thank you! i hope it comes out and i can post the finished product…

ahhhh! it worked! 2 times in the washer & it worked! thank you ladies! ill post a pic when its shaped, dried & i put the faux bamboo handles on. thank you again!

:cheering: :cheering:

Oh boy I can’t wait to see it. I am working on two felted purses now. One is the Lopi Tote, which I have made one of already and the other is a Buttonjar pattern called the Doctor Bag.

i would love to see them! its dry now, but im a little nervsou to go down and see. haha! i will have those handles attached today though and post the finish product… i cant wait to see yours too!

Here is my first Lopi tote (the pattern is on this website).
