Hi there! I’m working on this sweater, and I have a small section of a few wonky stitches where I tried to mend a small hole. Unfortunately, I can’t undo the mending. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could disguise this area? I haven’t been in the mood to finish this sweater because of the mistake, so I thought maybe I could duplicate stitch something fun over top it, but I’m not sure if that would work or what would look good in that spot. Attached is a picture with the mistake circled. (The sweater is much more of an emerald green than the picture shows)
You could maybe make a hoody pocket using the cables at the edges either side like in this example (but without continuing up around the neckline)
Good luck with whatever you decide to try,it’s a lovely jumper and well worth saving.
Ooo yes! Especially if the pocket had a little of that gorgeous cable she has from the under arm down the sides. Maybe right along the slanted openings… I would wear the heck out of this sweater with a pocket on the front. Color is lovely too!
There are some great videos on youtube for mending holes in socks like KNITFreedom How to darn holes that may be worthwhile if you don’t like the idea of pockets or embroidery. If it works out well it will be invisible. But it is a HUGE step and once you cut around the mended part to knit in a patch there is no real going back…
Besides the pocket, it is possible to fix this. I takes quite a bit of nerves to do, but if you practice on a swatch piece it might work for you.
You cut the yarn in the first correct row above the mistake. There you undo the knitting a bit in both direction, while picking up the stitches above and under. You need to undo a section long enough that you can weave in the tails. Exactly above the mistake you undo the knitted columns and redo them with a crochet hook (dropping one live stitch, pull the fabric apart and then redo again with crochet hook). It looks like some stitches are twisted, so you might have to do two columns at the time. Then you take a grafting needle and a new string of yarn and fix the row you did undo in both direction. Weave in the ends of the new yarn too.
Hm. The pocket could work, but would it “cheapen” the sweater? I don’t want it to look… tacky I guess. I don’t know if mending it would work because this all came about from me trying (and failing horribly) to mend something in the first place by trying to sew it back together and weaving in the ends
You should follow @plystreknitwear on Instagram, she does really lovely simple embroideries on her knitwear, something like that may work! I don’t think duplicate stitching would work very well, since the stitches are wonky – the duplicate stitching would likely come out just as wonky.
I agree with Bee, an embroidered butterfly, rose or something would look cute. Don’t get discouraged, it is a beautiful sweater!
You could perhaps needlefelt a star or something decorative over the repair - you might need to scatter a few to make it look right but on the whole, I agree the pocket is the best solution.
