I need help with understanding a pattern

All - I am no knitting pro, and I have just begun a project that makes a roll neck. This pattern is the anniversary sweater by Shetha Nolke.

The pattern is easy for me to understand, except when she comes to the neck part. The pattern says :

Work first 44 (48, 53) sts in pattern, work 16 (18, 18) sts and place onto spare needle; continue in pattern on main needle. <-- does this mean that i first go 44 + 16 sts and then place the last 16 on a spare needle, or go 44 sts and out of the 44 keep the last 16 on a spare needle?
Working both sides at once, work across 44 (48, 53) sts. <-- both sides meaning the front and the back, correct? so I keep 16 sts on a spare needle and continue going along the pattern for 44 more sts?

Really appreciate any help you can extend… This is one thing i couldnt even find a youtube video for… :knitting:

Sorry if this is a dumb question!

The pattern can be found here:

The way I read it and the way the stitch count works out for me is that you work 44 sts which will remain on your main needle, work an additional 16 and place them on the spare needle, then work the remaining 44 sts on the main needle.

Working both sides at once: Work 44 sts on the main needle, ignore the 16 held on the spare needle, join a new ball of yarn and work the remaining 44 sts on the main needle.

This is my interpretation of the pattern. If I’m wrong someone else will say so. Thanks so much for the direct link. That makes it so much easier.

And as you continue working the edges, you work some of the stitches with the spare needle at each edge.

Thanks for the reply!

The next line however says

Join new yarn at far neck edge. <-- The 16 sts on the spare needle then? So I join yet another ball of yarn and work the 16 sts on the spare needle?
Work first 3 sts on far neck edge with spare needle.
Continue to end in pattern on main needle.

I dont know why I am having so much trouble visualizing what the pattern is attempting to do here. :(. I looked at so many pictures but I’m lost…

Rereading and rethinking…

Now that I’ve read it again…It seems that after the first 44 sts and skipping over the held sts, you use the spare needle to work the first 3 sts of the second shoulder (this is where the new ball comes in) so you’ll now have 19 sts on the spare needle. Turn, work 41 sts on the main needle, work the first 3 sts on the next shoulder with the spare needle (22 sts on spare needle) then continue with the main needle.

My reinterpretation.

ETA This is difficult for me because it’s different from anything I’ve done with a neck before.

So I tried to break it down. Sorry for my drawing skills. Do you think I’ve got it right so far?

I don’t really get the drawing–my fault, not yours!

Work across 44 plus 16 that go on the spare needle and finish the row.

Turn and work across 44 stitches. Join a new ball of yarn at end of 16 stitches and work 3 stitches from that edge to spare needle and then continue on main needle to end of row.

Turn and work across the 41 stitches that are left on the main needle, skip the center stitches and work 3 stitches on that edge with the spare needle, then work across the remaining 41 stitches on the main needle.

You’ll have 22 stitches on the center needle at this point and 41 stitches at each side.

turn and work across 41 stitches, skip the center stitches and knit 2 more stitches from the far edge onto the spare needle, then finish the rest of the row on the main needle.

turn and do the same thing, so now you have 39, 26, 39.

I’m going to try this and let you know if i get stuck! thank you. (sorry for the shoddy drawing :))
