I need help with a pattern!

Okay, so I’m a bit confused with this pattern I’m working on. It’s a shrug pattern and I’ve just finished the ribbed cuff. The next part of the pattern (starting the sleeves) states "change over to larger needles and St st. (RS) inc 1 st each side this row, then every 5 rows 23 times–90 sts.) (I started with 42 sts).

So here are a couple of questions… first, what type of increase would work best kfb, pfb, or m1?

And second, when do I start counting rows? Do I start counting with the very first knit row (with the first increases) or would row 1 be the first purl row? :??

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

any of those would work, except the pfb, as you won’t be on the purl side I’m assuming. Personally, I use M1 as I don’t like the little bar that you get with kfb, and you start counting your rows with your first decrease row, so your purl row would be row 2. Following this your increases will be done on rows 1, 7, 13, 19, etc…

Okay, I see what you’re saying, but if I count the first increase row and row 1, wouldn’t the next increase row be row 6 (which would be a purl row)?

Yes it would, it will alternate incs on k and p rows, and you can use whatever purl increase you’d like on the purl side. Use the purl counterpart to whatever you decide to use on the knit side.

You know, i started to type that some of them would be on purl rows, then deleted it and thought it was just to early for my brain, turns out it was, cause i was doing this…

1 (five in between - 2,3,4,5,6) 7 (five in between - 8,9,19,11,12) 13…

Lol, not every 5th row!! I knew i shouldn’t be offering help when I just woke up :teehee:

Thanks Suzeeq…

Thank you!! I’m going to try it as soon as the kids go to bed!!! Wish me luck!!
