I need help reading pattern directions

My pattern says to:

Work 4 rounds of purl, (4 rounds of knit, 4 rounds of purl) twice
.[/b]

I’m not sure how to interpret it. Do I:

Work 4 rounds of purl, then only repeat the (4 rounds of knit, 4 rounds of purl) part twice,

or do I:

Repeat the entire row of instructions two times? Am I making sense? :??

I would assume only the directions in parentheses are repeated twice, but I’m not positive, so hopefully someone else will give an answer.

Purl 4 rounds,
k4 rounds,
p4 rounds,
k4 rounds,
p4rounds.
