I need a pattern for a gift

My cousin is enlisting in a few months, and you could say I kinda flew off the handle. This cuz is my favorite, I love him so much… We’ve always been able to talk, and he means a lot to me.

I have some problems with enlisting (no flames please… not wanting to start a hot topic, just stating a fact) and I was really hurt he didn’t tell me he was considering it. I know, it’s his life, his choice… But we’ve always been pretty close.

Anywayz, I won’t support his decision but I love him, and I will always support him. I want to make him something for his birthday, (at the end of this month)… But I don’t know if he goes overseas, what he’ll be able to take. Thoughts? Ideas? Patterns?

People often knit socks and helmet liners for soldiers. It gets pretty darn cold in many places. Both of these items can be hidden pretty well, too. I’m sure others will have ideas, too. There are some pretty cool camo yarns now, too.

Here’s a link with lots of ideas. Personally I think a scarf is a bad idea, but the others are good.

Thanks Jan!! I am waiting for him to get my apology letter, and then he’ll probably call me. I don’t know what branch he is going to enlist in… :sigh: it’s just so scarey to me.

What? No one else has any ideas? No one? No one? No one?

Be patient. For one thing I think I gave you the main projects are are knit for soldiers so they may not have any other ideas, but you have to give people time. It’s summer and the weekend so people are busy.

I know… I’m just cranky today.

Sorry you are feeling bad about your cousin’s decision.

If I remember correctly, when they go to basic training, they can only have certain things and can have other things when they get their duty assignments. I’m not 100% sure about that – someone with more of a military background could advise you about that.

Helmet liner was the first thing that came to mind & Jan gave you a 2 good sites for those. I like the neck gaiter idea on the first site, too. I agree with Jan about the scarf, although it might be okay for when not on duty. With the extreme weather in some locations, being able to get warmer while not on patrol would be helpful. I was thinking also of a tiny keepsake bag (to fit into a pocket) – to put things that are unique to your relationship in – for example a marble (have you lost your marbles!), a penny or silver dollar, etc. Their space is limited, so I’m not sure what else to suggest.

Hope you hear from your cousin soon, so you both can have more peace about your relationship.

Thanks AuntCrafty and Jan!!
