I don’t know if that’s knitted or not, but it reminds me somewhat of ‘My So Called Scarf’.

I don’t think that’s knit at all. I remember doing something similar with ribbons years ago–it’s more like a hand weaving.

I have seen a few YUMMY hats made like this
it looks like a multi strand (bunch) braiding/weaving
its so pretty
and the softness of the yarn comes through Big time

The first thing I thought when I saw it was entrelac, but I like the theory that it’s woven. As ecb suggested, the “grain” in the basket-weave looks more like strands of yarn than knitting.

It looks like the same weaving technique that the scarf on the cover of Vogue Knitting is made out of.

Try searching for a braided scarf. I think these are the instructions:

When I was young, I made belts that way.

If I recall correctly, you take several strands of nylon (I found it at the hardware store), put an O or D ring in the middle, folded the strands in half, then just started weaving, in and out, from one side to the other. It has been years since I did it, so I’m not sure exactly how I did the weaving. But to finish it off, I heated up an old knife and seared the ends. This made them stick together and cut off the ragged ends.

Be Careful! when the nylon gets heated, it liquifies and can burn you badly.

That looks almost exactly like the picture she posted, even down to the colors.

ETA: Except that it’s using strands of yarn instead of knitted cords.

Yes, woven.

I actually think weaving is more appropriate for scarves than knitting.

That weaving/braiding technique reminds me of the friendship bracelets we used to make out of embroidery floss maaaaaany years ago when I was in elementary school.

I had thought at first it was the Japanese braiding (kumihimo), but that makes more of a square type cord.

it also reminded me of how we use to take gum wrappers and weave them together… its very pretty

Good old fashioned braiding. Very cool looking!

I actually have a pattern to make a Hawaiian lei with this weaving technique. I can email it to you if you’d like!

Is it weaving or braiding? and what exactly is the difference?

To me, weaving and braiding are the same thing?
