I keep getting stuck

Everytime I try to follow this pattern, I end up starting over.

This is where I am getting confused:

DRAWSTRING WAISTBAND:

Cast 89 stitches onto the long straight needle. (Yes, I said 89. Trust me.)
Ok, Done.
Knit 2, Purl 2 onto the size 6 circulars.
I did this.
When you get to stitch #89, slip it onto the other needle.
Ok, I was working the yarn, knitting two and purling two. Then I got to the last stitch, which I am assuming is stitch #89. I slipped it onto the other needle, with the rest of the other stitches. Am I right??
Knit 2 together (ie: the “extra stitch” and the first knit stitch in the next round)
This is what I did last time, but I don’t think I am supposed to knit the two together that I knitted together before. Which two stitches should I be combining? Should I be making a circle out of the straight line I am working? I have no idea which two stitches to combine…
Knit 1, Purl 2
Knit 2, Purl 2 all the way around
Place a stitch marker inbetween stitches #88 & #1
Knit 2, Purl 2 for 6-10 more rounds.

When you get to stitch #89, slip it onto the other needle.
Knit 2 together (ie: the “extra stitch” and the first knit stitch in the next round)
What you are asked to do here is to “join” the two ends of the fabric so that you are now knitting in the round.

The second line of instructions tell you to k2p2 from the original straight needle onto a circular needle (although why they didn’t just start with a circular needle, I don’t know).

Does this help?

Yes, you are supposed to be making a circle out of the straight line of knitting you started out with. You will knit together the ‘extra’ stitch (#89) and the stitch at the opposite end, which would be #1.

Hmm… Hard to picture in my head. I am so needle and wool challenged. I am going to try to figure this out!!

When you get to the end of that first row, spread your sts out so the beginning of the row is on the left needle tip, next to the last st of the row. Then the last st and first stitch together.

Also, don’t try to picture it in your head, just do it. Once you see it coming together on the needles, it will make sense.

Hmm the instructions given are not very clear are they? let me try.

on your circular needle you have 89 stitches right?
the working yarn is coming from the second to last stitch on the right needle of the circulars. stitch number 1 is on your left hand needle.

Holding the circular needles in a loop so that the tips are close by slip the 89th stitch from the right needle to the left needle.

Then with the working yarn still coming from the right needle knit into both the first two stitches on the left needle (which is the number 1 stitch and the 89th that you just slipped there).

This joins your work nice and securely into a circle so you can knit in the round.

after knitting those two together, knit 1 * purl 2 knit 2 * reapeat the bit between * until the last 2 stitches then knit to.
that is one round complete in k2p2 ribbing,
the next round just k2 p2 all the way around
