I have this pattern and I don't know what I am doing wrong

hi I am new to the forum and new to knitting. Working on my first cowl and i got this pattern and I keep going from 58 stitches to 60 or more. I think there are too many yarn overs or I am not reading something right. So here it is

CO 58
row 1: purl
row 2: k3 * yo (yarn over) K2 SKP (slip stitch, knit stitch, pass slip stitch over)K2tog K2, YO, K1.YO K1
repeat from * to end. K1

so am I reading it wrong? and I was wondering when it says repeat to end that means to the end. cause that is like three YOs with only two decreases? and does the period matter? Sorry, its just very confusing I have been looking at it for like an hour wondering where I was going wrong.

It might just be right.
There can be more YO’s than decreases, if they get decreased on subsequent rows. It’s not something unusual. Especially with lace.

I’d say, just trust the pattern.

Periods or anything else don’t matter at all, it’s about the rest.
Repeat from * to *, that is probably meant.

You’re correct that the pattern as given is increasing one stitch every repeat. Since it’s a cowl, it may well be increasing for a while as you knit from the face portion towards the neck and shoulder. How does the pattern continue? Do these 2 rows repeat throughout or just just for a limited number of rows?

A lot of things that rest on or near the neck tend to have increases past the bottom. This ensures that it fits snug at the thinner part of your neck and at the top… leaving no gaps when you wear it. This is especially true of a cowl because it’s just a little tube that covers your neck. Just do the pattern and see where it goes. You ended up with two extra stitches, so I’m guessing that pattern repeats twice. If that’s true, you’re doing it right, then. If it’s three extra stitches, then you repeat the pattern three times. Don’t worry about increases or decreases, as long as they match the pattern. If you’re not sure, read it carefully… look for a decrease per increase and if there’s extra of one, then the pattern wants you to decrease or increase.

your pattern does an increase. Right. one more increase than decrease per repeat. That may just be right.

one repeat 10 (original) stitches, right?

k3 * yo (yarn over) K2 SKP (slip stitch, knit stitch, pass slip stitch over)K2tog K2, YO, K1.YO K1
repeat from * to end. K1

that is for original stitches:
yo (yarn over) K2 SKP (slip stitch, knit stitch, pass slip stitch over)K2tog K2, YO, K1.YO K1

so 4 pairs plus 2 = 10 stitches.
plus 3 initial and 1 final stitch…

that makes 5 repeats of 10 = 50 + 4 edge parts = 54… so what on earth is this repeat good for if it does not cover all stitches? Or does your pattern say something about 2 edge stitches to be worked or anything?
when finishing the repeat there are 11 stitches, as you found out.

So when you work that as instructed, it should come out to be 63 stitches at the end of the row.

Is there a link to the pattern? That may help.

Thanks for the info. Its so confusing reading patterns. This is the link to the blog http://luisafelice.blogspot.com/2010/12/easy-cowl-pattern-knit-today.html that I got the pattern from. The lady says she has a hard time writing down patterns. I was just going to do the first two rows which is suggests at the end of the article. I figured it would be easier for me than trying to remember rows 1-4. I think I am going to just go with it and see where I end up. Any other advice will be much appreciated! I never had a hard time with sewing patterns but knitting patterns are a whole 'nother ball park! This site has been absolutely a life saver! I probably would have given up if it wasn’t for this site since I don’t know anyone that knits where I live. My grandmother knits but she lives at least 10 hours a way! So thanks everyone!

I think she didn’t put the * in the right place. See what happens when you do it like this -

row 2: k3 * yo, K2, SKP, K2tog K2, YO, K1 * YO, K1
row 4: K2 *YO, K2, SKP, K2 tog, K2, YO K1. Repeat from * to end. YO K1 K2

Maybe… It gives you a multiple of 9 sts in the repeat like she says, plus 4, otherwise it would be a multiple of 10 plus 3 on R 2, and 10 plus 4 on row 4. You’d still be increasing sts, but only 1 each round instead of every repeat. I’ll have to play around with it and see how it really works out. You might need to leave out the last YO.

there is definitely something funky there. She talks of a repeat of 9, but suzee agrees with me that the repeat given is a repeat of 10, right? So there is a mistake.

Maybe the last yo k1 is accidentally doubled?

if you write it like this:

k3 * yo (yarn over) K2 SKP (slip stitch, knit stitch, pass slip stitch over)K2tog K2, YO, K1.
repeat from * to end. K1.

I mean: leaving everything out that comes after that strange “.” then it will work out. No increase and no 10 stitches but 9. Maybe this really just is a doubling. That does happen, when you correct patterns and do not pay attention to what is left of the original writing.

That would be my best bet. Then you have 6 repeats of 9 (54) and 4 (3 in the beginning and 1 in the end).

A good idea on the internet: write to the writer. That often helps a lot.

PS: in row 4 she has the same mistake and the same “.” infront of it.

The pattern does NOT increase so there IS a mistake.
Reasoning: she wants you to join the ends after you made full circle (knitting from one side around). So both ends (cast on and bind off) need to have the same size. So there are no increases.

I thought it was strange that she had the “.” when every where else there was a “,” so I didn’t know if that was common or not. Someone else on the comments made a question about it and she said she fixed it but maybe she didn’t actually do it when I last looked. I was thinking that if I just took the last Yo and K1 out it might work. Thanks for reaffirming that that might be the best thing to do. I think I will try that and see how it works. And if that doesn’t work I will have to try again. But I do really like knitting and I don’t mind trying again! That’s the fun of it!

I was thinking that if I just took the last Yo and K1 out it might work.

Yes, I think that will come out right for you.

good attitude for a knitter.
Have fun on the project! If you knit the way we propose and repeat row 2 only (i did not check the interaction between 2 and 4, that is why I am asking) you will come up with a nice cowl. Enjoy making it and wear it with pride.

No, row 4 needs to be knit as written, except for the last ‘yo k1’. It starts with k2 and should end with k2 as well; Row 2 starts with k3 and ends with a single k1.

That is what I assumed about row 4, but since the poster said she was only going to do the “sized down” pattern as also adviced in the blog: repeat row 1 and 2 (and leave out 3 and 4) I did not bother to check on the corresponding structure.

I do think, as I wrote above, that row 4 is entirely right except for the YO K1 in the end.

To ‘size down’ you’d work over less stitches and leave out a repeat of the 9 stitches. You wouldn’t leave out rows, just stitches.
