I’m completely new to knitting.
I just learned how to cast-on, I think, but I keep having this extra tail from where I couldn’t use all the beginning yarn…
I’m just trying to learn so I just grabbed some old yarn I don’t like.
Can anyone explain what I do with this tail?
If I must I’ll take pictures. xD
you can sew it into your finished work using a tapestry needle its also called “weaving in ends”. if you are a visual learner here’s a youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce3u-T1nzIo&feature=related
Hope this helps.
Welcome to knitting!
If I understand you correctly, the extra tail of yarn before your first stitch is suppose to be there. The length will vary based on where you make the beginning loop. Don’t make it too short, as you will want to weave it in when the project is completed and not have it pop back out/un-weave itself.
You should have an extra end. It’s called the tail and you weave it in at the end.
for a lot of projects I use the tail for sewing the pattern up in the end. It all depends if you sew from where the tail is (what piece you are making) and how long your tail is. you need one, though, definitely. otherwise the first stitch will come undone.
If your tail is really, really long (sometimes it is hard to figure out how much yarn for the long tail) you can cut it off to 4 or 5 inches as long as you have enough to weave. Mostly you have to be careful not to use it to knit that first row … been there, done that … and always so surprised when I get to the end

:teehee: who hasn’t?
Also casting the long tail with reversed tails… very funny untill it is not anymore
