It’s been a while since I’ve been here, but I have been knitting like a fool.
Now, here’s my question. When a patterns calls to use two strands of yarn and cast on 58 stitches, do you then only knit 58 stitches or do you separte the stitches and kniw 116…
I’m always confused…

You knit the two strands together as if they were one, so each stitch will have two loops to it, but you knit both together for one, so you’d knit the 58 stitches.
work each double stranded stitch as one stitch. so 58 stitches.
eventually you will forget you are working with two strands anyway.

I was searching for a quick afgan/throw to do and one of the ones I came up with was using two stands. So does this make the afgan/throw bigger?
Seems it wouldn’t but hey, I’m one that has to see it first.

It doesn’t make it bigger… it makes it… more dense. I think I am saying this right…
The two stitches together give the knitted fabric a more solid look and a softer feel. More of a plushy snuggly blanket. A single stitch would make it the same deminsions, just not as full. Someone correct me if I am wrong… I could just be knitting real tight on all my double stranded stuff!

well it depends on a few things. how thick is the yarn that the pattern calls for and how big are the needles. is it suppose to be a baby afghan or a full sized afghan?
58 usually won’t be enough for either i would think but it does depend on the other factors too.
