I just saw the hand surgeon testerday- I’ll be in acast for 3 weeks (he wanted 4weeks- but, my time in thestates is limited) if this doesn’t fix the left thumb injury (from last fall- just limited medical care overseas) he did mention ‘surgery’…
so, i’m glad that i got all of my charity projects finished before this- because, I was afraid that he’d tell me ‘no knitting’… i wasn’t even thinking about a cast. it’s hard to type w/ one hand- so, ignore the lack of ‘caps’
Wow what did you do? Play the cast up for all the household chores you can !! I dislocated my thumb and have been in a couple of different thumb spica casts. Depending on what you are knitting and which hand is casted you can still knit. My left was casted so I was able to use size 13 needles and work on a prayer shawl while casted. It was pretty, but it gave me something to do while someone else did dishes and cleaned the shower :happydance:
P.S. If they didn’t offer you a colored or waterproof cast you can buy colored duck tape and wake it up a little. The hubby wrapped mine in camo duck tape as a joke. I talked the adult clinic into offering fiberglass colors - I work in the peds clinic.
:biting: i won’t be able to knit the way it is casted… plain ole white plaster waswhat they gave me- i’ll look in to the duck tape- he did say ‘no knitting’… the movementswill bother the torn left thumb tendons
Ouch! Sorry to hear that, I know what it’s like not to be able to knit because of an injury. You could always take the time to look for new patterns to try out when you’re well again. I hope you’ll not need surgery.
How horrible that he said NO KNITTING ! My ortho said as long as I was in the cast I could do what I wanted. The ligaments I tore result in what’s called Gamekeepers thumb. The surgery they would do requires a graft to scar into place and I wouldn’t be able to use my hand (knitting or working) for months so for right now I am wearing a small CMC splint that I got our OT department to make me. When it gets too bad I get cortisone injections and cast it for a couple of weeks to let the inflammation settle down.
If they let you out of the cast without surgery there are neoprene thumb splints that you can totally work and knit in and it helps keep the joint in place and the swelling down. If you’re interested I can find the names on mine.

But each time I read the title of your thread I think it says “I have cast on my thumb” Meaning you developed a whole new cool cast on where you put the yarn on your thumb!
