I dyed yarn today!

With the hubby out of town I finally decided to try kool aide dying yarn ! This is the super bulky yarn that was given to me by a coworker. It smelled horrible before dying, I rinsed it and then dyed it and with the kool aide it smells awesome now. Having never done this before I didn’t realize how much kool aide it would take and I don’t really live near a good grocery store so I had to supplement the blue and green with food dye. The purple grape is a little blotchy…

love the colours! Have to admit that I have never tired it…maybe someday when all the kids move out…
:knitting:

those look great! and that sounds like a lot of fun to try. thanks for the pics!

Cool! That is something I’ve always wanted to try … maybe this summer!

Very cool! I definitely want to try this sometime!

Wow! That’s really cool! Never even thought about doing that! I did dye my hair at 14 with kool aide though! :lol

OMG!!! Those colors look so awesome!!! All my friends are constantly telling me that I should dye my own yarn but I have just not felt compelled to delve into that, but these cool colors might sway me to try it! Way to go!!

 Good job! Beautiful colors.

Is it colorfast? Can you wash it/wear it and the colors stay nice and bright?

I wouldn’t want a cool-aid sweater leaving me … purple. :oo:

Can you use super wash wool and sock yarn.

as this is my first time dyeing yarn. The lady at my LYS that suggested I do kool aide dyeing does have socks that she has made that way. There are actually directions that tell you how to set a hank into different jars of color at the same time for a striped effect. My yarn is so bulky I opted to make each hank a different color and will do felted joins as I knit.

As for colorfastness - suppossedly it will hold b/c it is set with the citric acid in the kool aide and some added vinegar. The rinse water was clear on everything other than the purple - that left a faint blue.

It is sooo humid here I am still waiting for it to dry. I will post pictures of my felted items so you can see if the colors run…

On a side note, you can drink it at the same time… That is a very cool trick… heheh

Great colors!

Yes, everyone, it is colorfast! At least the dozens of people I’ve talked to and hundreds of articles I’ve read have said so, and my own experience shows

I started the yarn dyeing thing about a month and a half ago. It’s so fun! Here are the three I’ve done so far:

  1. 2.
    3.

Very Pretty I love the first one.

This is gorgeous, and so fun! I want to dye yarn with KoolAid now. Is there a special instruction somewhere? Your balls look great.

Kool Aid dying so much fun! You can use icing dyes too. I like the kool aid better.

These are great! I had no idea this could be done.

You can also use straight up food coloring.

For people who want instructions, just google “dyeing yarn with koolaid” and you’ll find lots of different options, including a couple articles on Knitty!

You can also search the dying/spinning thread on KH - that’s where I found the link I used.
