I can't make this "easy" pattern work!

Hi All,

I am currently making the “easy lace cowl” by Donna Edgar for my mom (it wouldn’t let me include the link, so please just google that and it will come up). It says to cast on 222 sts, however because this is a repeating pattern of 8 stitches, it doesn’t end at the end of the pattern and so every 3rd row, I add an increase. I don’t know what to do… Am I reading this incorrectly? Is it supposed to increase?

Thank you SO much for any advice and or help! I’m new to this. :aww:

is it this one - http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-lace-cowl-4 ? (it’s the only one that comes up on ravelry with her name as a link) if so, it says it’s a 6-stitch pattern repeat, not 8, and 4 rows…

"Round 1: *yo, sl2, K1, p2sso, yo, K3, rep from * to end.
Round 2: Knit.
Round 3: *K3, yo, sl2, k1, p2sso, yo, rep from * to end.
Round 4: Knit. "

i wonder if the 6/8 is the issue?

That is the one! When I follow the pattern, I easily keep the 222 stitches, but it doesn’t end on the last stitch of the pattern each row… so it gets screwed up. For example, row 3 of the pattern ends with k1, p2sso, yo still remaining… Am I doing this wrong?

Oh and it’s 6 stitches, but you work with 8 to perform the 6 stitches… if that makes sense.

i’m gonna let the experienced ladies handle this one, but i did try the math from 222 cast on stitches, and when i account for the additions of YOs and subtractions of slipped stitches and knitting 2 together, etc… i don’t come out with 222 at the end for row 1 either… it seems 224 would work for row 1, but 222 for row 3… but i checked the comments on ravelry and nobody mentioned math issues (until yours just now)… so, experienced among us… thoughts, suggestions? it looks nice. if you can get it to work i’m sure your mom will love it.

Thanks so much! I actually tried to see if anyone else had the same problem and I appear to be the only one! I wonder what we are missing!

And I found that 224 would work for all of it… but I’m in too deep! I don’t want to start over and since no one has mentioned having issues, I assume it’s me.

The Rav page states that it is a 6 stitch repeat.

An easy lace cowl - the pattern repeat is just 6 stitches and 4 rows

If you’re working it as written it should come out right. You’ll need to figure out where you’re off. IMO the best thing you can do is start over and pay close attention to what you’re doing, try to find where you’re making the mistake(s). You can use stitch markers every 6 sts so that you know you are doing each repeat correctly.

Yes, the pattern works with 222sts in a 6st repeat but you should have no sts left over at the end of a round.

Why do you say that you need 8sts to work the repeat? Are you using a stitch to do the yarn over? A yarn doesn’t use a stitch. In this pattern you would simply bring the yarn to the front and over the left needle then slip the next 2sts, k1 etc or do the k3. The first part of this video shows the yo between 2 knit sts

Salmonmac!! You solved the problem! I am using a stitch to do the yarn over. I’m a new knitter and that was how I learned to do yarnovers. shoot!! I think I do have to start over, but at least I know the problem! Thanks so much.
