I can't figure out the knit stitch

I just started knitting and I’m having a really hard time trying to do the basic knit stitch. I can cast no problem but it’s creating the second row I have a problem with. It just turns into a jumbled mess literally. It only looks right when I’m ending but the otherones just go over the other ones and just tangle. I make sure they don’t tangle but they just do. I just can’t do the stitch right. If anyone knows what I’m doing wrong please help

Hi Ashes! There are different things that can cause something describable as a ‘jumbled mess’. I have probably done all of them. Could you take a picture of your attempted first row? That could help figure it out. For instance, using a bigger needle than necessary can cause your knitting to look like big loopy lace if you are just starting out. Not holding tension evenly can do the same (meaning sometimes the yarn is stretched out when you are grabbing it for a stitch and sometimes it is droopy, so one stitch is small and tight and another is loose and big.) Just using the knit stitch on both sides will give you a garter stitch pattern which looks nothing like the pretty v stitch stockinette (which combines knit stitch on one side with purl stitch on the other), and looks pretty odd if it is not expected. No doubt someone hear can figure it out though

Welcome!
Maybe the problem is in the cast on? Which cast on are you using? A knit or cable cast on is a good beginner cast on since both use the basic knit stitch and provide a firm base.
