I cannot believe what I did!

I have a pattern for a really cute Ugg purse using two strands of Berroco Suede and some other funky “Snowflake” yarn. I didn’t realize how expensive this project was going to turn out. IMHO, $50 for a purse for an 8-year-old is a bit steep, but oh well. I read over the pattern and didn’t find anything that seemed too difficult, so I started knitting. The whole thing is done in stockingette stitch. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing! I knitted the front of the purse, the back of the purse, and the bottom and started working on the sides. For some reason, the side was not turning out right and I kept frogging and starting over. I thought I had lost my knitting ability (again) and so I put everything down and decided to quit for a while. Then I picked up my Vogue Knitting book to look at the stockingette stitch. The front and back and bottom had SEEMED to turn out okay - they had little V’s going on - 30 stitches wide. The problem didn’t come until I started the sides at 15 stitches. Once I opened my book, I realized what my problem was: I had been doing a rib stitch!!! I’m so mad at myself! Now I have to frog it all and start over, and I’m sure I wasted a lot of that Suede. I’m probably going to have to go get another ball or two by the time this is done.

Lesson learned - From now on I will check my books BEFORE I start knitting to make sure I really do know what stitch I’m supposed to do!

I hope you’ll post a picture when it’s done - I’m really curious what an Ugg purse looks like!

The purse is really cute - my daughter fell in love with it. There was one already made in my LYS and I bought the pattern for it! Once I get it right, I will definitely post a photo on the What’cha Knittin’? forum .

Here is a photo of Ugg boots so you can get a general idea what the purse will look like. It’s pretty much patterned after this pair of boots. The body of the purse is “suede” and it has a fleecy-looking lining and it is “sewn” together with the fleecy-looking yarn. The fleecy-looking cuff even folds down over the top of the purse! (Don’t you love all my technical terms!)

I’ve seen the knitted little baby uggs (they are on my to do list, just because they’re too cute!), but never a knitted ugg purse! I bet it is very cute…Can’t wait to see a pic of yours!

Who is the pattern by?

Someone from my LYS must have made the pattern themselves because this is printed out on cardstock. The only logo or anything like that on it is a logo for the LYS, and then it says, “Copyrighted 2004 by Yarn Company” (Yarn Company = LYS). They don’t have a website yet - they are a fairly new store.

Speaking of my LYS, they are very nice people there, and you should see the sweater that the one employee was wearing! I cannot even describe it except to say it was incredibly beautiful and she has oodles of talent.

is Ugg the word for boot in an indian language from Alaska?

I don’t know about that but here is where the inspiration from the purse came from -
