I have a pattern for a really cute Ugg purse using two strands of Berroco Suede and some other funky “Snowflake” yarn. I didn’t realize how expensive this project was going to turn out. IMHO, $50 for a purse for an 8-year-old is a bit steep, but oh well. I read over the pattern and didn’t find anything that seemed too difficult, so I started knitting. The whole thing is done in stockingette stitch. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing! I knitted the front of the purse, the back of the purse, and the bottom and started working on the sides. For some reason, the side was not turning out right and I kept frogging and starting over. I thought I had lost my knitting ability (again) and so I put everything down and decided to quit for a while. Then I picked up my Vogue Knitting book to look at the stockingette stitch. The front and back and bottom had SEEMED to turn out okay - they had little V’s going on - 30 stitches wide. The problem didn’t come until I started the sides at 15 stitches. Once I opened my book, I realized what my problem was: I had been doing a rib stitch!!! I’m so mad at myself! Now I have to frog it all and start over, and I’m sure I wasted a lot of that Suede. I’m probably going to have to go get another ball or two by the time this is done.
Lesson learned - From now on I will check my books BEFORE I start knitting to make sure I really do know what stitch I’m supposed to do!
