I can NOT stockinette!

I just recently started knitting. I watched all the vidoes and have a few books to help me, but I am doing something wrong! Everytime I try and do stockinette, it just turns into garter! Does anyone have any ideo what I could be doing and how to help?

Thank you!

Cast on a few stitches, then knit one row, then purl one row, then knit one row and so forth.

If you end up with garter, … well, that’s a problem. Except if you’re knitting in the round. When knitting in the round, you knit (or purl) every round to get stockinette. Doing knit one row, purl one row, in the round gives you garter

Are you sure you’re doing the purl stitch correctly? There a video showing just the purl on the glossary page. Probably one for a knit stitch, too.

It would help if you tell us what you’re making. Are you knitting in the round or are you knitting flat? Do both sides look the same? If you’re doing the stitches properly it should come out fine. So my guess is you aren’t doing the stitches properly or it could be one of these situations:

Knitting in the round for stockinette is knit all stitches, no purling.

Knitting flat for stockinette is knit a row, purl a row alternating.

You have to alternate a knit row with a purl row. Knitting all rows, or purling all rows, makes garter stitch.
