My friend wants this hat for her son’s 2nd birthday. I have offered to try to make it for her, but I’ve never made a hat so I’m not exactly sure how to make it. I’ve asked her for measurements, but in the mean time I figured I could come here for advice. Would I start at the top and keep increasing down, or would I start at the bottom and work my way up. I’m thinking I should probably just start at the bottom and go up. How do I make the wavy rim? Should I work it in the round or should I knit flat and seam? Any advice will be appreciated!

I have no idea. I’m not really good at telling the difference between knitting and crocheting by just looking at a picture. I don’t know how to crochet, but if it is I can probably make a knit version I would assume. :shrug:
well, for the ruffle part you could do it separately, with double the stitches cast on, knit, then k2tog all across, then knit onto stitches on the bottom of the hat.
Or look up a fancy crochet stitch you could add.
I’m not at all sure how to do the top. My slash and burn costume approach would be to knit a large, skinny triangle, with a curved bottom and glue it to a sturdy paper cone. I have a hard time seeing knitting standing straight up like that for long.

I looks like crochet to me, which would be stiffer than knitting. Making something with a cone inside would work, though.
That is definitely crocheted – possibly with wire or a lining to keep it upright like that. Nylon “yarn” perhaps?
Well, I just stumbled across this and I remembered your post. You’d have to line it to make it stiff but it cone shaped.
Knitty Gritty on DIY had a magician hat that you could change to look like that one. It’s the same conical shape, you’d just add the ruffle and such after you’ve completed it.
