How to stitch together 2 rectangular piece to make a poncho?

Hi! I’m making my first poncho. Finished the 2 rectangular pieces but don’t know how to connect the 2 together. What stitch do I need to use? Please help.

Check out mattress stitch in the finishing videos. I’d give you a link, but I can’t for some reason do that here at work.

If mattress stitch is the one you do with the right sides facing you and becomes invisible on the right side, then that is the one I prefer for things like this as well.
