How to start DC fringe on poncho?

I finished a toddler poncho (I used Mosaic Twist Fruity, it’s for my niece and it is SO CUTE!). I want to add fringe, and I have some fuzzy yarn to use (a yarn bee frost). I found a DC video online and watched it a few times and I get the gist, I think, though with all the fuzz on this yarn it’s going to be tough I think! Problem is, I have no idea how to start. The video was a double crochet stitch as part of a crocheted piece. I have never crocheted, so it’s all new to me. I’m not getting how to apply the DC stitching as a fringe on a knitted piece. Can anyone help? I’m dying to finish this thing! It’s the first thing I’ve done that I’m really proud of  Anyway-if I can’t figure it out soon I’m gonna do a regular fringe with cut pieces. TiA!
