I know how to do the crochet steek, but I don’t know how to start and secure the first stitch - top of a bound off edge.
Thanks,
Jaye

You just go underneath the bind off chain and that will secure it. Once you’ve cut and stitched the insides down, it won’t make any difference anyway.
there are also a good many online resources that give great demonstrations and well worded explanations on the subject.
Do you know of any online sources. I went to Eunny, but it did not address my question. How do you finish the beginning and end of the crochet steek?
Thanks,
Jaye
Are you asking how to begin and end it? If so, you just begin by slip stitching under the bind off chain at the top of the sweater and pulling it tight. You then slip stitch or single crochet the steek, work the bind off chain you come up to, and then pull the yarn to fasten off.
Once you’ve cut, you fold the cut pieces under the fabric and lightly hand-stitch them down, if you like. If you don’t want to, you can leave them alone, no one will see.
Did that answer your question? If it didn’t tell me and I’ll try to elaborate some more.
Eunny actually does explain here-
