Hi, I am finally done knitting my first sweater which is the baby yoda sweater. The first piece of seaming is to join the back and the front pieces at the shoulders. Both those edges have been cast off according to the instructions. How do I seam these? The mattress stitch does not work as the direction is different. I am familiar with the 3 needle bind off but does that mean I have to pick up stitches. How would I do that from a cast off edge?
I am truly stuck at this point and don’t know how to proceed. So, a thousand thanks for any help you can give me.
Congrats! I just finished my first sweater a couple of weeks ago and ran into the exact same question.
To do the 3 needle bind off you would need to rip the cast off and use the live stitches on the front and back. The advantage of this would be there wouldn’t be a thick seam line at the shoulders. I didn’t want to rip so I actually used the mattress stitch for the horizontal. It is invisible from the RS but leaves a seam line inside. I found the instructions for both vertical and horizontal in Ann Budd’s The Knitter’s Handy book of Sweaters. It’s exactly the same movements as vertical just in a different direction. Let me know if you’d like me to explain in more detail.
