How to read this pattern

The pattern says

Knit, (16, 18, 20, 22, 24), k2tog, k2tog, k2tog, knit (16,18,20,22,24). (35,39,43,47,51sts).

I know it’s telling me to decrease but I’m not understanding what the numbers in parenthesis mean.

Welcome to KnittingHelp.

The numbers in parenthesis are the stitch counts for the optional sizes and at the end is the stitch counts for the row after your decreases (one count for each of five sizes.)

You are making three decrease stitches in the middle of the row.

If you are making the middle size you would have 46 sts on your left needle (43+3). The pattern then read as follows:
k20, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k20. (43 sts)

If you are making the smallest size it would read like this:
k16, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k16. (35 sts)
