How to read this chart

I was reading through posts and saw where Ingrid posted this under patterns… about Cate’s doll… I went in and checked out the video they have knitting fair isle with 2 hands… they said after you watched the video you could do the purse… well I know what X(right hand yarn) and O(left hand yarn) is from the video but I have no idea what the other symbols are and I don’t see where it says LOL… am I having a  moment?? LOL I’d like to try it practicing the different sts they did knitting 2 handed : ) TIA for any help

edited for another question: On all charts do you read odd rows from right to left and even from left to right? TIA

edited again for the link now you see why I asked if I was having a  moment

To me it seems like there must be 5 colors, background, x, o, y and -

It never says specifically anywhere how many colors though…it did mention background plus scraps of other colors so I can only assume that is what they mean.

You’d think they’d be a little more specific since this is for learning a new technique!

I did a sweater from their book, and from looking at the chart, the x’s are one color, the o’s are another color, the v’s are a third color, the blank spaces are the background color and the blanks with dashes in them are purled background color.

Since the bag is knit in the round, all the rows are read right to left.

As for right hand/left hand, I tried their way, but I like using my right hand for both colors, so I can’t help with that part.

Thank you Kemp and Ingrid!! I’m hoping to give it a try we will see how it goes lol… I had trouble with my son’s car and afghan I’ve been working on… getting holes when I change the colors… and my LYS knitting inst. told me that I should try with two hands cause she knits american and kept getting turned around on showing me how to pick up the yarns… I’ve looked at Amy’s videos too just trying to find the best way for me to do it… I did his car two handed and kept giving the yarn that extra tug they tell ya not to do but it looked so loose  now I know why his car is puckered

It’s easy to avoid holes when you change colors in intarsia. Just make a point to hold the yarn you’re switching from over to the left when you bring the new color up to knit. Do it every time and they will twist and not leave holes.

The FairIsle bag is a different technique since both colors are carried all the way around and there’s no potential for holes since you’re more taking turns with the colors rather than switching entirely from one to the other.
