How to not have button hole band pull up?

I am making a baby cardigan…(I’ve noticed this on other cardigans that I’ve knit as well, and hate it!)…when I knit the button hole band, it’s shorter than the rest of the bottom band on the cardigan. How can I stop this from happening please? I’m attaching a pic so you can see what I mean

That happens because garter stitch is more compressed than stockinette or ribbing. You can even out the different stitch patterns by working a short row every so often on the garter stitch. Knit across the button band, turn at the stockinette and knit back across the button band again. That’ll put 2 extra rows on the band and should even out the band vs main body of the cardigan.
Depending on the gauge you may only need to do this every 10-20 rows. You’ll just have to try it and see what works.

Ok thanks…but will there be a stitch that looks different between the band and the cardigan stitches when you do this?

No, no stitch. There’ll be a small hole but it’s not noticeable. You can try it out and see what you think. I’ve never felt that it was necessary to compensate for the hole.

Here’s a video that may help:

I’ve done this more than once; it’s a good thing to know. Among other things, it comes in handy on baby blanket patterns that have a garter border and a different pattern stitch for the main part of the blanket.
