How to make a triangle shawl with a longer back

I am making this triangle shawl Ravelry: Faroese Style Shawl pattern by Carol J. Sulcoski

Where the increases are at the back point. But it is coming out too short in the back. Are there techniques to elongate the back point without distorting the drape of the shawl?

I’d try short row shaping to make the back longer. I’d place the first turns about the middle of the part the covers the arms and then work progressively shorter turning rows while maintaining the center back increases. You’d need to keep the multiple for the border in mind as you increase each side of the center back. Where to place the first turns is more or less arbitrary, you could put them closer to the front but I think closer to the middle back could result in more of a point than would work well with the overall shape of the shawl. Are you familiar with working short rows?

Not yet, but have been looking at some tutorials for another project. Great idea!

I wonder too if you could space out the yarn overs down the center line. It would take a bit of experimenting to determine how frequently to do this (every other RS row, every third, fourth?).

So a taller yarn over every once in a while? But let me know if I’m not following you correctly. Thanks!

Regular size yarn over but spaced out regularly. You could try every 4 rows or whatever gives you the length you would like. I’m not sure if this will give you the overall shape you’re looking for but mayber try on a small swatch. Also try the short row method GG suggested. That’s a good idea.

Ah. Got it. Thanks!

I’ve been looking at photos of projects again. Reading the pattern I can’t comprehend and the pictures aren’t decisive for me - does this have five sets of increases, center back and one on each side, both front edges? (I’d have to work the pattern to find out for myself.) I doubt there is a way to significantly increase back length without distorting the shape noticeably. I’m not sure I understand salmonmac’s described method. I’d saved this pattern before but for some reason when I looked at it I never decided to make it. Maybe it was the extra long ā€˜garter tab’ start that put me off. That seems to predetermine the front length and I love flexibility that lets me just keep going. Also, being of the giant economy size variety I like larger shawls better.

Anyhow, it’s lovely and I hope you figure out this modification to your liking. I admit to being a one trick wonder - short rows are my first thought for changing things to the desired size and fit.

Thanks so much! Actually it has 4 increases every other row… one at each edge after the garter stitch, and one each side if the center.

I am going to try a ā€œshort rowā€ approach, moving the side garter over each time. If that doesn’t work out I will try simply eliminating the side increases (eg yo then k2tog before and after the garter stitches). Wish me luck! And sorry for late reply… have been traveling but took this with me.
