I’m not sure if “pom-pom” is the correct scientific term, but I have completed a hat (in the imitation weasel wool I wrote about earlier) and I want to add a fluffy little yarn-ball on the top of it. Can anybody tell me how to make one of those?
Take a piece of cardboard and cut it to about 4" by 2" wrap your yarn around it length wise about 30 or 50 times.Take a peice of yarn about 4 inches long and slip it under yarn loops on the long END to gather them up and tie it REALLY tight.Slip off of cardboard and cut the loops opposite the end you tied. Now hold it in your hand by the thread you tied the loops together with and push up on all loops and shake. It will look really funny, long and short strands so you have to trim it with a scissors to form a ball, It takes a little practice to get the trimming right so I would make a smaller version to practice on.That is how you make a POM_POM.Hope this helps  Here is a tassel
Thanks! This worked like a charm.
Here is an update to the link from momwolf’s helpful post.
This thread is 8 yrs old. He/she probably figured it out by now, but this may help someone else so thanks…
