I’m a new knitter and I’m working on a dress for a stuffed bunny. Right now I’m at the part where I’m putting stitches on waste yarn to create the spot for the sleeves to attach, but I don’t understand the directions – I’ve put 6 stitches onto the waste yarn, but the part that I don’t understand is that the pattern instructs me to transfer the stitches with the waste yarn back to the left needle, and then instructs to “knit through these stitches…”
Does that mean that I should knit each stitch as normal, leaving the waste yarn hanging there; should I skip those stitches to create a hole (but then why would it instruct me to transfer them back to the left needle?); or should I knit all 6 of these stitches together, just as I would with “knit 2 together” when decreasing???
Could it be that you’re supposed to knit 6 sts with the waste yarn (instead of slip them), then move those sts back to the L needle knit them again with your regular yarn?
What are the directions following the part about “knit through these stitches”? Maybe the next few lines would help in figuring this out. Or what does it next say about the waste yarn?
Yes, look ahead. It sounds as if you’ll take that yarn out later and have two sets of live stitches to pick up and knit for the sleeves (probably in the round.)
Yes, further ahead the pattern does instruct me to “place the 6 sts above and below the waste yarn onto dpns and pick up 2 sts in each gap and join” before knitting the arms in the round. I must be missing something really obvious, but I just don’t understand how I will have a gap left to start the sleeves if I continue to knit each of of sts that are on the waste yarn…Or am I supposed to knit through the waste yarn ONLY, and not the stitches that the waste yarn is holding? Aha! Have I just had an ‘aha’ moment???
Thanks to everyone who is helping on this; I really appreciate it!
I still think you might have to knit the 6 sts with the scrap yarn, not slip them on it, then reknit them with the regular yarn. Try that if the other way doesn’t work for you.
See what happens when you follow your Aha! moment. I think that when you put the 6 sts above and below the waste yarn onto dpns, you’ll see the gaps for the 2 extra sts at each side. It doesn’t seem like you’ll have holes for the arms as much as almost a seam or joint where the arms begin.
