I am trying to knit a baby raglan sweater .The pattern says
Row 6: Rib 4, p8, place marker on needle, p6, place marker on needle, p13 place marker on needle, p6, place marker on needle, p8, rib 4.
Row 7: Keeping first and last 4 stitches in rib, knit across increasing 1 st before and after markers. (8 increases made- 57 sts.)
Row 8: Rib 4, purl across row, slipping markers, to last 4 sts, rib 4.
Repeat rows 7 and 8 twelve times MORE. (153 sts.)
My questions are
1.I am able to do row 6 and row 7 first time. When I repeat do I have to put PM right after P8 again or change the place.
2.I used yarn for place markers making a slip knot and attaching them as rings.Do I have to remove the place markers once I complete row 7 or leave them there.
I see this to mean you place the markers…say you have 2 sts to start and you put one in between. You increase both those sts. So now you have 2 sts and pm and 2 sts. The for the next row (row 8) you just do the rib purl rib keeping the markers where they are. Then, when you redo row 7…In the example you now have 2 on each side…you increase one on either side…so now you have 3 sts the pm and 3 more sts. You keep doing this as pattern says.
It always helps me to visualize what is happen. You are working a top down raglan. The increases are making a diagonal line down the sweater.
4 ribbing-front edge
8 purl- 1/2 front body.
6 purl- shoulder section (which will become the one sleeve later)
13 purl- back of sweater.
6 purl- shoulder section (which will become the other sleeve)
8 purl- 1/2 front body.
4 ribbing-front edge
You increase one stitch before & after the marker which becomes-
4 ribbing-front edge
9 purl- 1/2 front body.
8 purl- shoulder section (which will become the one sleeve later)
15 purl- back of sweater.
8 purl- shoulder section (which will become the other sleeve)
9 purl- 1/2 front body.
4 ribbing-front edge
So every other row, you are adding 1 stitch to each front half, and 2 stitches to each shoulder/sleeve & 2 stitches to the back. Since you have 2 sleeves & 2 half fronts, that totals the 8 stitches per row of increases.
You move the markers as you work. They are just there to remind you where to do the increases. I use a scrap of contrasting yarn.
Leave the markers on the needles and just slip them on the following rows. You don’t add new ones, but they will mark the places where you make increases.
