How to knit this shape?

I really hope my question makes sense!
So I’m making another little knitted bag that becomes this shape:

and now make one long piece, which becomes the flap, back, base and front. Then two almost triangles for the sides (forgive my crappy doodles):

I don’t like having to sew the side pieces on so would like to pick up some stitches in the right place on the long side and knit my side triangles out. I like the idea of the stitches lying sideways, I think it will look nice.

I could easily knit a rectangle here but how would I make that kind of tapered shape? I just can’t get my head around what I’d need to do.

I really hope I’ve explained what I mean!
Here’s my prototype which was sewn together:

The knit bag is adorable. It looks like the perfect size too.
One way to do this is to pick up sts at the long side and work short rows to get the triangular shape that you’re looking for. Make the short row turns toward the top or opening of the triangle. That way there will be fewer rows at the top and more rows toward the bottom. You’ll have to experiment with where to place the short row turns and how many to work.
Most of the purses on Ravelry don’t have this extra gusset on the sides but the idea is similar to the shapes made with the Aviatrix hat.

Hi Salmonmac
Short rows! I’ve never done them before but am aware of them. I assume the premise is that you’re working some stitches along the row more than others, so one side grows as the other end stays the same?
Thank you for the compliment- I’m hoping my second go will be a lot better!

Yes, that’s the idea. This is a nice video for the German Short rows although there are several other techniques for short rows which work well.

This silent video shows the effect of short rows at one side of the swatch.

Let us know how it’s going and good luck!
