I would really like to create a baby blanket with a similar X and O pattern. However, I’d prefer the X’s and O’s to be more widely spaced and without the ribbing between rows.
Has anyone ever seen a similar pattern (doesn’t have to be for a blanket, but something I could adapt)? Or does anyone have any suggestions on adapting the Besotted pattern?
I I am looking for the same thing as I’m doing a baby blanket for my great niece to be !! All the patterns I have found were all done in cable stitches which is not what I want. Looking for just knit & purl done in rows of xo, xo across row !!
Graphs are read from bottom up, as you would knit. Odd rows are read right to left, even rows are left to right (because you’re on the back of the fabric.
Say that the white squares are knits on the right side and purls on the wrong side, and the gray squares are purls on the right side and knits on the wrong side. That should work, but I’d advise doing a swatch to practice until you get the hang of it.
Here’s a video for basic chart reading, the sound isn’t great but it is a very clear tutorial for a first time chart user.
I agree with coloCro that you can write your own legend for this
White squares : knit in the right side, purl other wrong side
Grey squares : purl on the right side, knit on the wrong side
Learning to read charts is not as hard is it may seem, I just learned a couple of years ago and was surprised at how something seemingly difficult turned out to be not so difficult after all. It opens up so many different patterns and options to make your own designs or modify patterns too.
A swatch is a great idea to learn the chart reading. I would cast on 14 for the chart plus enough for a border, perhaps 5 each side so total 24. You could work 4 rows in plain stockinette before starting the chart, then place a marker either side of the chart stitches (14) so that you know on your knitting where the chart stitches begin and end each row.
If you are able to print the chart out you can write on the row numbers which you might find helpful.
I usually cover up the rows above the row I am on with post it stickers (or I now have removable/restickable strips of highlighter tape which I find sticker better), or I have also used a strip of card or paper and some paper clips or bull dog clips to keep it in place, it helps to focus your eyes on the row you’re on and to keep track.
There are online and app chart minders too if you like working from a screen.
