# How to knit a sleeve by increasing?

I am a beginner. I am working on a baby sweater. I do not understand the directions. Can someone please help me interpret this one line:

" cont in seed st inc 1 st at each end of next row and every foll 4th row to 37 sts."

so I started with 23 sts.
worked 4 rows in garter st.

then it says,
1st row (ws): K1, P1 to end.
1st row repeated forms seed stitch.

so now I have knit two rows to form the seed stitch.
which puts me on the (ws) now.

How do I proceed?

To stay in seed stitch after the first couple rows, you knit the sts that look like purls and purl the sts that look like knits. Do the first increase on the RS which will be the next row, and then every 4th row after that. If you do the stitches as I wrote above, you’ll still be in the stitch pattern, no matter how many you increase. The end sts on the increase rows might not match the pattern, but you’ll put them in the seam anyway and they won’t show.

ok, so at the end of the next (rs) row increase 1 st.
then continue in seed st for 4 rows, then at the end of the 4th inc.
so the pattern goes like this,
r1: (rs) seed st, first increase at end
r2: (ws) seed st
r3: (rs) seed st
r4: (ws) seed st
r5: (rs) seed st, second inc. at end
r6: (ws)
r7: (rs)
r8: (ws)
r9: (rs) third inc.
…etc

i need to increase 14 times… so that means on rows:
1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,33,37,41,45,49, & 53.

then cont in seed st until sleeve measures 4 3/4 in.

do i have that right?

Not just the end, both ends, each end - the beginning of the row as well as at the end. But otherwise yes you have it, do an increase row, work 3 more, then inc on the next, work 3 more, and so on. Since you do 2 incs on those row, you only do them 7 times - rows 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, and 25 to get to the 37 sts.
