How to knit a hat the right circumference?

Hi again!

I’m a new knitter, getting ready to start my first hat (after only doing scarves).

This hat pattern has a ribbed cuff and then stockinette stitch to the top. It is done on two #7 needles with Red Heart 4-ply worsted. As stated in my previus post a few minutes ago, I’m still figuring out how to test my gauge.

The pattern says to cast on 90 stitches and then to k1p1 for 1-1/2 inchest, then switch to stockinette.

Here’s my question:
This is for my 10-year-old nephew. When I visited him over Christmas, I measured his head around where he said he would wear the hat. The circumference is 20".

How do I make sure that the hat will fit him? How much do I allow for stretching the brim when he puts it on? (I won’t be able to try it on him since he’s 1200 miles away.)

Thanks for your help.

Take a look at this pattern. You just put in the numbers and figure it out. I’m using 100 for my DH.

THANKS!

I’ll give it a try.

yup, i am in the middle of making one myself. my head is pretty small, so i only had to cast on 80 sts or so. at first i thought that all that math was confusing, but after actually doing one, it was pretty good!! have fun!!! lots n lotsa fun!!! FUN FUN FUN

Math and Knitting… exciting and interesting!!! :XX:
