How To: Join a Different Color only K1, return to old color

I am making my very first baby hat in the round: Berry Baby Hat on Ravelry and Random Stitches’ sites. Loving it!

I have knit my berry 4 1/2 inches in depth and am ready to begin adding my stem in green and decreasing. How do I join the green by only K1 and returning to my old, berry color? Essentially, how do I cast on one? (I only know the long tail cast on.)

Here are the directions:
Join the green yarn leaving a longish tail, and K1 green then K7 Berry. Repeat around. As you come around and are 1 stitch away from the first green, stitch…

Please keep in mind, I am such a newbie and all the knitting codes like “CO” and “sts” still need interpretation at this point.

Thank you for your help!

No where does it say you cast on a stitch; ‘join’ is just start knitting with the other yarn. Knit 1 stitch with the green yarn, drop it and pick up the berry and k7. Drop that and k1 green, then k7 berry.

After using the green yarn, pick up your berry yarn under the green yarn. Next green yarn stitch, pick up the green under the berry yarn to prevent holes.Do this every time the color changes.

Take a look at the Fair Isle video under the Free Videos tab at the top of the page, Advanced Techniques if you want to see an example of changing colors and twisting the yarn.
These hats are so adorable. Good luck with yours.

And here’s a video that shows you how to ‘catch’ the floats on the back of fair isle so they aren’t so long. I don’t remember where it is in the video, but it’s a good one to watch anyway.
