Hi, is there some kind of formula to increase the sizes in a knitting pattern. Please explain easily as a complete math dumbo!!
I don’t know about “sizes” but if you want to add an inch just take how many stitches per inch you are getting and add that many evenly distributed through the row, or where you want them added if you’re looking for a different effect.
Here is a site with the size standards, http://yarnstandards.com/sizing.html
Thanks for that Mike, I actually need to resize a shrug which is knitted cuff to cuff. The current size is 12" armspan and I need it to be at least 15" :??
Measure between the shoulders and the arms to figure out where you need to add how much.
Knitted cuff to cuff makes it easier. You just knit rows until it measures the right length then go on to the next step.
Keep track of what you did on one arm so you can do the same on the other.
Between the shoulders you may have to knit half the length you need so you can add the extra rows in the center. (I don’t have any idea of what goes on between the shoulders on a shrug.)
If it’s something like cables you have to figure out how to stuff in the extra here and there so it balances out.
12" or 15" armspan? Did you mean arm length?
Sorry don’t think I explained properly. It is knitted cuff to cuff [actually it is just above elbow to the same the other side] It is knitted across i.e. the neck to wherever I want to be down the back is what I will be knitting across so when the stitches are on the needle it is the width of them which will determine where it comes too. The length i.e. elbow to elbow I think will be o.k. It is an 11 stitch lace repeat with 2 selvage edge stitches. I was also thinking of going up a needle size as that will make the garment bigger as well won’t it?
That is “neck down”. Cuff to cuff would be progressing from cuff to cuff.
Lace is very different and I don’t think anything I’ve said applies.
I don’t do lace so I have no idea.
Yes, going up in needle sizes makes something larger, though not that much just one size. 2 sizes makes a real difference, and doesn’t make it that loose a knit.
Sorry Mike, I seemed to have confused the issue, it is cuff to cuff but the ‘neck down’ is the width of it so this is the part I need to extend i.e. the stitches as they appear on the needle. The lace repeat is very simple. Think I am going to have to knit a swatch and work things out from there. Thanks again Suzeeq, the original pattern uses a 4mm for the ribbing and 4.50mm for the main part, as it is an aran yarn I think 4.50mm for the ribbing and 5.00mm for the main should be o.k.
Good heavens, with an aran weight yarn and in lace, you could easily go up to a 6mm needle. Use 5mm for the cuffs, and the larger one on the lace part. It sounds like the pattern was written for a thinner yarn and if you kept to the same needle size it would be very dense and stiff.
Suzeeq, the pattern actually uses an aran weight 100% silk yarn. So do you think just increasing the needle size will be enough without adding extra pattern repeats? Also the person who I am making for measures 18" around the armpit and 15" around the top of the arm. The pattern itself comes out to 12" around the top of the arm:??
Yes I think just using larger needles should increase it enough without having to increase the stitch number. Silk is a funny yarn, it doesn’t flex like wool. Are you using the same yarn as in the pattern? It doesn’t matter though, knit up a sample in the yarn and larger needles - do a bit of ribbing, then go into the lace pattern - and measure what you have and see if it will be wide enough across the whole pattern.
Yes Suzeeq I am using the same yarn. O.k. will do, thanks again for your help:yay:
