My grandmother used to use a syrup made from boiling white sugar in water. She used to stiffen the ruffled lace edges of her fancy doilies. I have heard of others using starch and water. In a helpful-hints book I found advice that the water drained from pasta is the right consistency, although I have never tried that. Fancy crocheted baskets can be put over a form made from waxed paper or aluminum foil. Once they are dry, remove the foil. This method works for small projects. I hope something here helps. It may trigger someone else’s thoughts. Have you thought of working some wire or plastic (bracelet) cord in with your yarn? I’m sure someone else can remember the name of the plastic used to make bracelets. I hope you find a solution. Good Luck.

Check out Yarnspirations, Drops Design, Joann’s all had various sizes to knit and I think they also had crochet patterns as well, I am going to try a suggestion to knit one up with a much smaller needle to see if it firms up the basket without having to use a fabric stiffener. There you go!, Good Luck
Thanks ,I am using the blanket yarn from Bernat (pattern called for it) and I am going to try smaller needles on the next one.
Thanks, those are the patterns I have ,they don’t stand up like the pics, going to try smaller needles than what is suggested.
