How to embroider on finished mittens?

I made some mittens for my brother, he is adult but disabled. Anyway, they are just gray and look so plain I thought it would be cool to embroider a skull on the top of each of them but I am not sure how to embroider on knitting (I have only done very basic stem stitches on fabric). Can anyone help me out or point me towards a website that can help?

I suggest duplicate stitch.

It mimics the right side of stockinette and allows you to add designs. Really handy if you’re like me and not much good at colour work, or want to add things afterwards.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for!

I been looking for a tutorial that will show me how to embroider letters onto yarn. These sites are good but it only tells me how to embroider in one direction. I need to make a letter V that will climb on the knitting and these tutorials assume I’m going stright up or down. Any clues to what I am talking about?
