A very elementary question. In knitting (scarf) is the size shown on the yarn always the correct needle size? Am knitting scarf and needle size on main satin yarn is US8. Second yarn is a very small mohair. Appreciate advice!
How to determine correct needle size for yarn?
I think the information on the label is what would be ‘average’ for that yarn and it’s also the size used to determine the approximate gauge of the yarn. You can basically use any size needle you want to get the fabric you want.
Of course, you can go too big and get loose floppy fabric, or too small and have it stand up by itself. It’s really what you want to do with it. There are no hard and fast rules. I use the needle size as a guideline.
Thank you so much for replying–and so quickly. I knitted about 10 inches on the recommended US8 needels. It almost stood up by itself, so I ripped it out and am knitting the two threads on US 10-1/2 needles. The multi-colors in the smaller mohair thread are softer, more muted than on the smaller needle size resulting in a more beautiful look. I have learned something new and that is always a good thing. Appreciatively, Barb
