How to count rows

I just took my first knitting lesson this morning and am already hooked. I’m making a scarf without a patter - doing 6 knit, 6 purl, 6 knit and 6 purl. How do I count the number of rows I’ve competed?

Look at the 'v’s on the knit stitches. Each one is a row.

I like to use a row counter when it matters so I don’t have to think about it. There are lots of different kinds available, some very inexpensive.
