How to choose the right type of wool (edited to add gauge)

This is the pattern I’m working from: http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=216 , actual pattern: http://www.bernat.com/data/pattern/pdf/instruction_216.en_US.pdf

They suggest using “bernat denimstyle (3.5 oz/100 g)” wool to make the sweater. I’m actually just looking to make it in a plain color. So I was wondering how I’d go about choosing the right type of wool, especially because I’m straying from the suggested material.

The pattern also suggests using sizes 4½ mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles, so would it be possible just to buy wool that was meant to be knitted with those sized needles?

You can substitute any yarn of the same gauge, not just wool. I would check out Knit Picks Merino Style…soft enough for a sweater and low $$$

Does it give the gauge in the pattern…if so post it here and someone might have a more specific answer.

Is the rule of thumb to match the wool with the needle size?

This gauge thing confuses me!

The yarn will have a gauge printed on the wrapper like the one listed in the pattern. You want to get as close as possible to what the pattern calls for but you might need one or two needle sizes larger or smaller to match the gauge for the garment, depending on how loose/tight you knit. If you do a search for gauge on this board you will find a more detailed explanation.

Is there any way to tell what the gauge will be before I buy the needles?
